Life is wonderful and it sure beats the alternative. Today we are living at the most wonderful time in human history in terms of longevity and physical fitness.

With our ample supplies of fresh food water, shelter and medical facilities we are living longer and better today than has ever been possible before. Our general quality of life and our understanding of health issues is largely responsible for the increased life expectancy figures of 80, 90 or even 100 years.

Your goal should be to live to be 80 or 90 or 100 years old, active and in excellent health, and you can do it if you decide to. First, set a goal to live to be at least 80 years old. Look at your current health habits and ask yourself whether or not the way you are living today is going to get you to the age of 80 in great shape.

Weight

If your goal is to live a long healthy life then weight should be your number one concern. Think about this for a moment. How many fat or obese 80, 90 or even 100 year old people do you know?

That’s right! You can’t think of any can you? Being overweight is the major cause of many life threatening illnesses. So if your goal is to live long and healthy, then it is time to start eating healthy and keeping your weight under control. Keeping control of your weight is a ‘self-discipline’ and there is a very simple formula everyone can and should follow.

Eating Plan

Follow a proper eating plan and a daily exercise regime and your body will soon be a lean mean fighting machine. The secret of a successful eating plan is to eat better food and in the correct portion sizes.

#1 Eat more, lean source proteins, fruits, and vegetables. #2 Limit your sugar intake, if you don’t see desserts you won’t be tempted ~ ban them from your kitchen. #3 Replace fizzy soft drinks with water. Water is the elixir of life it’s what your body needs to stay hydrated and to keep your skin looking good too. Drinking water before a meal also tends to curb your appetite. #4 Also vastly reduce salt and white flour products from your diet.

Eating can become either a good habit or a bad habit and it is up to you to decide which one. Start by eating smaller portions. Take time over your meal, chew, savour and enjoy. It’s not a race to see who can clear their plate the fastest. Sit at the table, not in front of the TV. Kick the habit of emotional eating. Go for a quick walk instead of popping that extra cookie in your mouth. When you have your weight under control not only will you look good and feel good but you will also find it easier to take control of your habits in other parts of your life, as well.

Exercise

A small amount of regular exercise each day is what is needed here. The secret is to ‘do something’. If you haven’t exercised for a long while then ease into it slowly. Start by parking the car a couple of blocks away and walking the extra distance. Walking for 30 minutes a day is a good goal to start with. Walk up the stairs instead of taking the lift. Remember every little helps, start small and build up.

When you decide to get more serious, buy yourself some exercise equipment or join a gym or a health club or even get a personal trainer. As with every area in life to achieve the success we are aiming for we have to set goals. Setting and achieving goals is our ‘measuring stick’ for success.

To attain excellent physical health and long life the same secret applies. Set clear, specific goals for your levels of health and fitness. Make a plan and then work your plan every day. This requires tremendous self-mastery, self-control, and self-discipline, but the payoff can be extraordinary.

Take a before and after photo, stick on the fridge as a reminder of why you are not to open the fridge door to snack on anything other than ‘healthy’ food.
